Recently these very colourful little birds has visited our garden,they feed in grevilla shrubs,there is quite a few,they are very small about 3 inches long.
They move very fast all the time,and difficult to get a good image.
Image 1 is how it came out of camera,2 is a crop-1000th iso 400 f 6.3 using 50D and 400 prime L hand held.
image 3 is using same gear and settings except speed-250th.
Hope you enjoy looking at these,as I certainly enjoy having them in garden.
Barry,the 400 mm prime F 5.6 is very good, had it since Sept 2009.Very light to carry in the field,a pleasure to use.
Never thought of using a 2 times tele with the 70-200 F 2.8,I think it would be very heavy and cumbersome in the field.
I seem to find the 400 a good length for birding,I used to use a 70-300 was always at 300.obviously a 500 or 600 would be better,but out of the price range for most of us.
Has anyone here used a 70-200 with 2 times tele? Might be worth looking into Barry.It would make the lens a 140-400 at 5.6,a defacto Canon 100-400 (mine will be without the IS).But would be interested to here how it would go in use.
I have a RAW file of first image,so maybe able to lighten it up a bit and do some work with it,the image is as it came from camera,really only just starting to use 50d with 400 L
Great shots. If you get an extender would it reduce the light further? F5.6 is a slight handicap already. ($related of course)

Cheers Chris, I found a good review that is a bit more enlightening. To sum up, it is better to just get a 400mm as you reduce the f stop of a 70-200 and also lose image quality, but for around $400 or so it's a good alternative to thousands of dollars..
