There are some galaxies that are squarish in shape (with their arms), so anything is possible. I don't think we'll really know the answer for a long time.

What's wrong with that Image!

The image used in the article is surely wrong though.
I believe the latest was that our galaxy ia a barred spiral not a conventional spiral (perhaps with some straightish arms).

Anyone else familiar with the barred spiral milky way home!
