Planet X

Hey guys I'm just new here but I just got word that Planet X (Nibiru) is at
5h 53m 27s,-6 10' 56 to 58 in the southern skies.
Can somebody confirm that?
Thanks Mark

Do you know any astronomers, amatuers or otherwise who can look in the sothern skies at?

Anyone can look at that location, though not until the early morning at this time of year. If you do you will see .... <drum roll> ... nothing!

The whole thing is a fake but it has more lives than a cat. BTW this location is right near one of the most looked-at objects in the sky, M42 the Great Orion Nebula. Apart from being a staple for visual astronomers it is probably photographed nearly daily by someone somewhere in the world. Certainly not the best spot to hide a planet!

You've been had. Planet X, Nibiru, doesn't exist. All that is there (close nearby, actually) is an infrared source...IRAS 05509-612. It's a star.

People get so easily taken in by this sort of nonsense and then you get people wanting to make out like it's some big conspiracy of silence on the part of astronomers and such...like we're not telling the public the truth. It's easy to get caught up in these things when you don't know anything, or very little about astronomy. How many people these days even bother to look up at the sky at night?? Not many.

Take this sort of nonsense for what it is....garbage.

Just to concur with David, it's right next to M42.

If it's in or around the neb', it's most likely a young star shrouded in dust. If not, it maybe a carbon star (a cool red giant with a lot of carbon in its spectra).

Where that is, you might as well paint a huge target on any planet there and light it up with neon lights!!!!

We're all going to have to get used to it, interest in this is only going to increase as 2012 approaches, so best be prepared with some polite answers for these misguided people. I'm please to see some people can do that.

Just one more thing, a planet in our solar system would rotate around the sun. So if it was at those co-ordinates, it wouldn't be there the next day. It would either shift a small amount depending on its rotation.

Your typical Planet X devotee would try to counter this by saying..."Oh, but it's actually coming straight for us.". The straight and simple answer to that is "it's not a planet, or anything else from the solar system, then.". The reason being that there is no orbit which would allow for this type of geometry. A simple review of conic section would tell you this straight away. An object coming straight at us is traveling along a straight line path...not an orbit, which by definition must be a conic section (normally an ellipse, but in some cases a parabola or hyperbola if it's a long period comet).

If it's coming towards us along a straight line path, I would do either one of two things (depending on what I found out subsequently)....1. Roll out the welcome mat or 2. Go to DefCon 1

I had a bloke come in to work and ask me if I knew that a planet Called Nibiru is heading towards us to dominate and conquer the Earth and all the people on Earth.

He had no idea I was into astronomy, and I'd never seen him in the shop before, but he certainly picked the wrong person to share his news with (he wouldn't know I have been studying this Annunakian and Nibiru theory and false Religion for about 3 years)

After I explained (in friendly terms) that it is crap and if it did exist it would be seen by thousands of amateur astronomers, which it isn't, he continued to explain that us amateurs can't see it because it is coming in from the other side of the Sun so we can't see it.
So I asked him "if it's behind the Sun how do you know it's there?"

He said "I have to go, appointments and all that" and he quickly left

I can see Uranus from my back yard!

So I would hardly not be able to see this purported planet!

Sorry but that youtube movie was posted by an idiot who claimed to have discovered Planet X in real time on google sky. Sorry but google sky is not a reliable picture of the night sky and it certainly isn't real time
