Recoating the Hale mirror

I've Just finished reading 'First Light' by Richard Preston, it contained a lot of Hale Telescope history. Google led me to this ...
Re coating the Hale mirror

I wonder if any of the workers there sneak their own mirrors into the tank for a recoat? :-)

When the 3.8m up at Sidings Springs is recoated in the vacuum chamber, sometimes
it is accompanied by some mirrors of smaller aperture.
