The general idea is simple. We're taking advantage of the fact that our future telescopes will include flexible mirrors that bend and move upon command. By understanding the deficiencies in an image, we can compensate for them by remote control—no astronauts needed. The power of this method lies in its ability to use an optical system's existing camera as a sensor to detect its own error, without installing any separate devices.
