Snake Valley Moon, 14 Mar 2010

The thin waning crescent Moon was a wonderful sight from the Snake Valley camp on Sunday morning. Here's a couple of shots of the Moon reflecting in a pond below the observing field. Canon 400D, 55-200mm lens.

Didn't have any choice in composition unfortunately, unless I was prepared to wallow in the swamp, or trespass on adjoining private property. Would have liked to have got closer to water level (had to shoot over the top of a barbed-wire fence as it was) and include some more interesting features (eg tree) to break up the horizon.

Cheers -

Thanks all! The rising Moon was amazing, with the earthshine coming up above the treeline as a luminous orb, followed by the thin bright arc of the crescent. Really topped off the long night of observing well.

I saw Rob walking off towards the swamp, camera and tripod in hand, eyes fixed on the reflection, and waved him goodbye (and good luck!)

Glad he returned with "the goods". Yet again a nice Moon shot.

Thanks people, it was great that so many people stayed up to greet the rising Moon and the dawn light! Pity that more didn't brave the perils of the swamp though, LOL!
