Data to back up galaxy hunting

Found my first telescope galaxy the other night. NGC 7314 in Pisces Austrinus.

When I researched the galaxy online I did find lots of interesting info but I couldn't manage to find the distance or dimensons. I checked NED, NGC online, NGC-IC project, SEDS, and many sites through my search engine.

Can anyone tell me this info or even better, a site that does? I suppose calculating distance from redshift velocity is not simple?

The only info that I have comes from 'Hartung's'. Not much but.....RA=22.31.5 Dec=-26.03, Vis.mag = 10.9 & comments = Fairly bright,large galaxy. ???? Any help? L.

Hi JPS I suggest that you get yourself a copy of Hartungs Astronomical objects for Southern Telescopes, and the Burnhams Celestial Handbooks,they dont have the distances to every object but give a distance for most objects. NGC 7314 is a close by galaxy at about 35 milion light years, but its distance is not in any of thes two books.
To get data on all the objects of the NGC and IC catalogues, all 13226 of them you have to go to specific galaxy and other nebulae catalogues.

Have you tried CDS or Simbad? They cross reference with those you listed.

I've got the Sky Atlas 2000 deluxe edition. Now I want one of these. I've had a look at reviews and they both look great. Which one? If one thing could sway me either way it would be if one had more detailed physical descriptions of stars, or more of these descriptons. Any help with this decision?
