ADSL Bigpond for one

Hi

Has anyone else noticed a change in their ADSL speed. I am on a 1500/256 plan and have been downloading at 156KB/s until about a week ago. Now My downloads are averaging 400KB/s to 450KB/s.

I have not asked for or heard anything from bigpond. It is not ADSL2. I am not complaining but I would like to know what is going on.

Are those Kilo bits or Kilo Bytes? 1.5Mbits/sec should be good for about 150KBytes/sec.

If you are getting 400KBytes/sec I'd say they've upped your link to 8Mbit/sec which is as fast as ADLS1 goes.

Your router should tell you what speed it has synced at. I can get up to 1.3MBytes/sec out of my ADSL2+ which syncs at about 13Mbits/sec

Hi Andrew

Sorry that should have been KB/s around 5Mb/s getting up near the theoretical maximum for ADSL.

Yes I know how the system works. What I was interested in was if anyone else had noticed if their systems had been upgraded. Usually if improvements are made ISP's would like to cash in on it with some publicity!

I needed to download a 500MB file which normally took about 40 mins. So I found something else to do but before I got started the download was finished.

Ahhhh!
Now I know where-is MY broadband speed is going!
We've gone for a rocking, world-beating, 0.8mbps to about 128Kbps!

Im on a simular plan to you Baz i wish mine would go faster mmm i must go check it out (you lucky bugger) no i wouldnt be complaining either bring on the speed i say

You've taken some of my bandwidthI was downloading at 150 now down to 40. I blame mine on the rain the hole in the ground is outside my side fence and itsfull of water.

I just saw this post decided to a speed test at www.speedtest.net and now getting a 25% speed increase. I have always complained about Bigpond slow speeds and when I called IINET to consider a change I found that the new regulated wholesale, retail split in Telstra has created a whole new set of boundaries. I previously wanted to change to IINET and was advised that my connectivity would still go through Telstra rubbish infrastructure. Now that has changed and can now achieve better consistancy through any provider as now the internet is carried directly to the ISP at the exchange. This is a great bonus as I can get some of the benifets of freezone options etc.

I believe that Telstra is now gonna have to pick up their games to become competitive and this maybe the new solution by not speed limiting.

I found out at least in my situation Telstra speed capped ADSL1 connection on a RIM. It seems from my test the speed cap is removed and so it seems.

When we moved out here to Murrumbateman I was careful to check with Telstra beforehand that they were planning to supply an adsl service - when we bought the land there were no houses out here at all and no power etc. They confirmed that adsl was going in along with power and phone etc.

When our house was about halfway built the telstra service came online and I applied for 8Mb adsl1, got it, checked it and it was indeed about 8Mbit downloads (750kb/s).

When we moved into this house I was still seeing around 8Mbit downloads.

Sometime in the next 12 months I noticed that my max speed was down to 3Mbit, and there it has stayed for the last 2 years despite my questions. I'm sure that telstra are intentionally throttling this, probably due to everyone out here using adsl.

I'm with internode (one of the best isp's imho) but still have to use the telstra infrastructure out here.

Not happy.

My home ADSL is now down to 12k the hole in the ground outside my place is now under 1ft water and the water is lapping 1/2 way between the road and my front door. Had 6 inches of rain overnight and is flooding the town, SES as been mobilised and part of the main street is under water and apparently have 5 meters of water coming down Bungil Creek the backwater to this is 300 meters away. I am keeping a wary eye on the situation and ready to race home at a moments notice.

I beleive you are in the same situation as me. I rechecked my speed as I did check the last time 1:00am. It is back down to a consistant 3MB/s which it annoying. Telstra are a law unto themselves. The lines still belong to them and if you are a bigpond user they give you the excuse of traffic, if you are not they just don't bother.

You can't win.

I received a letter todaty from BigPond stating my plan has a new name (making me suspicious) and the speed may increase. But how do I tell, anyone???

My little icon at the bottom of my window says 54 Mbps. Is this fast? Is this ADSL 1 or 2?

Use the links provided in this thread to test your network connection speed.

The 54 Mbps that is being reported is the maximum speed of your wireless network card.

Thanks H. Sorry I didn't see the link earlier.

I used this link and average 1.3 Mbps Download and 0.22 Mbps Upload. This sound like ADSL1. Would anyone agree?

The letter I was referring to states that my plan (Liberty) will be called Liberty Elite, and that I may notice faster speeds in the coming months. Well the Liberty Elite plans are for ADSL2 whereas I am still on ADSL1. Knowing Telstra/BP I expect I'll be on ADSL1 for years to come. Absolutely useless organistion. I have been through the TIO (Telecommunications Industry Ombudman) 3 times in 16 months about serious billing errors and false promises (even one woman in a call centre calling me a liar - he exact words "You're lying, Sir,"!!!

It wasn't until I raised these issues with the TIO that I received immediate action from Bigpond. They couldn't do enough for me, even offering hundreds of dollars worth of credits on each occasion.

You need to jump up and down pretty hard but they eventually listen.

Yep, 1.3/0.22 Mbps is indicative of a 1500/256 Kbps ADSL connection.

I'm on a RIM so can't get ADSL2+, even though it's cheaper. waa waa.

It's in any telecommunications company's interests to serve you as soon as they hear from the TIO -- the TIO is free for us, but, it costs the telco a lot of money. From memory, when I did my short stint at Optus, I recall them saying the first call costs a couple of thousand dollars to resolve with the TIO, and, it just goes up from there. So, giving you a couple of hundred dollars in credits is pittance compared to what the TIO would take them for.

Telstra has just sent me the letter to tell me I am now getting my plan changed to the ADSL Elite Liberty plan.

Unfortunately I am going the opposite direction, I noticed the other day that my previously quite good 4M down, 800k up speed had dropped to 2M and 384k up (I use Optus at home which is co-located in the Telstra Exchange), so while not being able to prove it, I assume there is some shenanigans going on in the doling out of ADSL speeds in my area.

Even the modem sync information is reflecting the drop shown in the Speednet tests so its pretty annoying to halve an already ordinary link speed for no reason.

Oh well, bring on the borg and then I can assimilate my mind to the net directly without any external peripherals.

I know that OPTUS no longer supply new connections where there is no OPTUS service in the exchange as with our area. Once they have a system available they may provide a full service. Although the de-regulation of Telstra Wholesale and retail has changed the goal posts a bit OPTUS still a dark horse when it comes to connections.

They may have reduced your speed as your service may have been connected prior to the policy change.

I recently found that I can change to another provider like IINET without major price changes and as they have a service in the exchange I can be routed through their backend provider which is usually more efficient than Telstra. One thing that was said to me is that from my home to the exchange I have to still rely on the Telstra infra-structure, I believe the infrastructure (RIM) may still be restricted, but things change from the exchange.
