Windows 7 Question

Hi All,

can anyone throw any light on the following?

I've bought a little Netbook to take away on holiday. I really only want it for collecting emails, but on ispection I find that "Windows 7 Starter" doesn't have Outlook Express as part of the package. I've googled this and found a load of people totally hacked off at this exclusion.

The blurb says that the included mail program is called Windows Live Messenger, but this doesn't look anything like a mail package to me - more of a blog writer (which it claims to be also!).

What do other people do who have Windows 7 Starter edition?

Any and all answers appreciated

All you need to do is download windows live essentials and pick which programs that are included in this to install it includes windows live mail which has all the same features of Outlook. None of the editions of Win 7 have an Email Client so you have to download for free the Windows Essentials. One thing with Win 7 Starter is you wont be able to run more than 2 or 3 programs at the same time.

FYI, Outlook Express was dropped from all versions of Windows 7.

As supernova1965 said, Windows Live Essentials has what you need.

It's funny how this limitation caused a bit of a stir. But in reality, who is really going to be multitasking on a Netbook which has limited RAM, a lack of any real processing grunt and most of all, a small screen. The 3 program limit is more than enough for me.

thanks so much guys Those answers are just what I was hoping to hear. I can do that easily enough. And as for running multiple progs, - well as I said, all I really want this for is to collect emails whilst on hols (in Italy and the western med).

Here is another Windows 7/Vista problem.
I use a multiboot system that uses the new method of startup using the bootstat.dat store
Priority of start up is accessed from the system/advanced area and works OK.

I have two incorrect entries that need to be removed.
The method explained is to use bcdedit.exe from the command line. However the only command that works is bcdedit /? which gives the list of commands. If I try to do anything else I am denied access.

Anybody know the correct procedure?

Try installing Easy BCD it works great and doesn't require command line work. You can download it really worth it

Hi Warren

I had trouble getting version 1.7.2 but 1.7.1 was available. I turned the computer on, installed it, removed the offending entries, re-booted to confirm. Took about 3 minutes all up. Job complete!

Hi All,

thanks to all who replied. I've had a chance to do the things suggested by Warren, and needless to say, it worked a treat. I now have mail plus a few other goodies. The netbook is a really cute HP Mini 110 (1158TU) and they were on a one day special at a local store for just $299. For that price, it's a steal, and now that I have mail, it will do the job I wanted just fine.

I was going to suggest bypassing microsoft altogether and going for one of a multitude of free 3rd party email programs.

On my desktop machine i use Thunderbird and for the netbook i use the "webmail notifier" plugin for firefox which works great with my gmail and yahoo mail.

Reason to avoid MS email programs is that the grubby little virus and exploit coders tend to target the weaknesses in software that all the noobs are using by default. Outlook (lookout) express has had a multitude of vulnerabilities exploited over the years
