smaller counter weight for HEQ5?
Anyone know where I might get a 2.5kg counter weight for the EQ5? I have two 5kg weights, but one is not enough, and 2 is too much

Have you checked out the Dumbell weights at Big W or K Mart?.

Just move the weight up the bar. that should do the trick.

It doesn't unfortunately. With one weight even when I have the weight all the way down its not enough. With two weights, even when I have the weight all the way up, it's too much...

Alternatively, I suggest you get a counterweight bar extension to extend the leaverage available to your one weight. That way you only will need the one weight so the mount doesn't get harder to carry.
There is a IIC member who makes very nice ones.. do a search for the thread regarding this.

Lateral thinking - add more weight to your scope, if your mount has the capacity. Perhaps put a finderscope on, if you normally have it off.

Make your own, melt down scrap lead, pour it into a small aluminum cake tin and drill a hole through the middle.
I make heaps of these for different uses, from 100 grams, poured into egg rings to very large 5-10 kg's, its pretty easy.

Problem solved - got a 2.5kg weight from Big W, and made my own locking collar with PVC and epoxy glue. Works a treat

I now have a better solution - I put an Orion Shorttube80 on my C8, and now I can use the two standard counterweights

For my first newtonian I made counterweights by casting concrete in a round plastic box (package for icecream cake).
The central hole was made of PVC.
