This occurs on a daily basis for many police members on the outskirts of Melbourne alone, not to mention the rest of regional Australia. It is just another thankless task that the police members are trained to do in their duties.
I have read many of the comments to news sites, some screaming because major roads weren't shut down, or why wasn't the roo euthenaised with an injection. What rubbish!
Often groups such as the RSPCA and animal welfare groups and even the council ranger are not available or not willing to attend. In fact, often when the public call the RSPCA for this type of situation, they are told to call Triple-0 !!! I know this from first hand experience through my job.
Having said that I have the highest admiration for a small band of wildlife volunteers who cover the Northern suburbs of Melbourne:
