I have started using carte du ciel with eqmod. Is there any way to turn off the automatic sidereal rate update of the sky charts?

Open Cartes du Ciel, go to the tool bar on the left and click on the clock (Date/Time) then uncheck the Use system time box.

Does that stop the "Now" button working?

You could leave system clock on and turn off the auto update.

Yes it does stop the "now" button from working if you uncheck the Use system time box.
