bushfires near Canberra again

On my way back from a hike up Mount Kosciuszko today, I saw a heap of fires in the Tinderry mountains near Michaelago.

The surrounds are bone dry, hot and windy.

I pray they get this one under control.

Hi Baz, here's the latest update as of this morning.

We are still on standby to send crews if required from our brigade.

Advice: Michelago (Tea Tree Creek Fire) Fire Update 21/12/09 06:48

Posted: 21/12/2009

Firefighters are working to fully contain a fire burning to the east of Michelago and the west of Jerangle Captains Flat Road.

Current Situation

The fire is burning in the area east of Michelago and west of Jerangle Captains Flat Road.
There is no immediate threat to properties.
Firefighters are working to consolidate containment lines in rugged terrain on the northern side of the fire in the Tinderry Nature Reserve. This includes the use of Remote Area Firefighting Teams and aicraft, working to cool down hot spots. Moderate and favourable weather conditions have allowed good progress on containment strategies.
People in the areas of Calabash, Tinderry Road and Bogabilla should use continue to exercise caution if travelling through the area due to fire activity and the possibility of falling trees.

Residents in the Big Tinderry area, Jerangle, Captains Flat Road and Wolgal Road are advised to stay up to date with the fire situation.
Advice

A fire is burning in Low-Moderate fire danger conditions. Generally under these conditions there is no immediate danger to your life and fires can be easily controlled.
In Low to Moderate fire danger conditions terrain is more likely to affect fire behaviour than weather conditions, which may cause an increase in fire intensity.
If the fire is burning close to your property, you should take steps to protect your life and home.
If the fire is approaching and you have doubts about your ability to protect your life and home, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Other Information

The Calabash Road is closed. The Tinderry Road between Michelago and Jerangle Road remains closed to through traffic only.
Fires within the Michelago area are producing large amounts of smoke.
