Just an Idea - but since Mars has been the planet of choice lately......

Hi People ,

Just an Idea - but since Mars has been the planet of choice lately and several people have been posting their mars images on the site, why not have a poll vote as to the best image for this opposition!

The contenders have had several images posted on the site. I myself cannot even imagine to get anywhere near the quality of those guys, so my level of appreciation and admiration for their achievements is high. So What do you think?

I'd suggest that we look for the biggest improvement from each individual - i.e. judge their early images against their latest and greatest, and whoever has shown the biggest improvement in their images & technique gets an honourary award :-)

There's so much variation on equipment and seeing conditions amongst everyone that it doesn't seem right to try and compare them together across the board...

I agree with Anthony, otherwise it could end up like the snake valley planetary contest.. there was always going to be just one winner with a fantastic shot like that

Finding 2 images to compare is hard though, because I could easily choose some poor ones in bad seeing and then my best in excellent seeing and say "look at this! choose me!"

It's a good idea though, there's been fantastic progression from some of the guys.

Yes Mike and Anthony that sounds like a great idea, a start of season shot and a end of season shot.

How about if we use the images that have already been posted to the IIS forums? Maybe Mike can write a script that'll extract and show all the images from each person in chronological order, - should make it fairly easy to see who has improved the most...

As I've only been around IIS for a few weeks you guys are fortunate not to have seen some of my early season first attempts at Mars - I wouldn't have to deliberately select something blurred and smeary cos they all looked like that - the better ones from early-on look a bit like a bloated cattle tick...

cheers,

Not a bad idea! Theres a lot of guys here that have achieved/learnt a lot in a short period of time. I'll be doing a 'worst to best' collage for mars soon in any case for myself to look back on in the years to come. The same with saturn/jupiter/venus.

Yeh I think that's probably the best way to do it, because most people don't post their junky images when the seeing was really bad. And seeing more than just 2 images (start of season/end of season) you'll get a feel for the progression as the seeing will have fluctuated over the course of their images.

I don't image it will be that difficult to write the script to do it, i'll start giving it some though about how it can be displayed.
