Hey Hey It's Obama-Day!

Barack Hussein Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize.
(Not for his astronomy day!!)

http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/6...l-peace-prize/

Is this a tad premature!?
Surely the prize should be awarded AFTER the successful removal of Nukes from the world stage or at least some progression towards it - not just talking about it!?

Agreed. Very hard to see what they based their decisions for this on. What's funny is that on some American forums they make it sound like Obama stood for nomination on this. Even if the Norwegian committee made a very strange decision, it was hardly Obama's own doing. If I were him I wouldn't be happy with this at all.

Is it really surprising?

Given that Obama's twit of a predecessor couldn't exercise diplomacy (and probably couldn't spell it either) and transformed the US into an aggressive superpower, any succeeding president who repudiated Bush's policies would have the Peace Prize in the bag.

In this humble poster's opinion the award is a bit premature...

But, congratulations President O anyway...

I truly hope he can follow through and realize the hopes that this prize represents.

It's a bit like giving it to Nelson Mandella before he had even gone to prison. He's espoused laudable goals and perhaps made a start but he has yet to deliver. BTW scientists don't get Nobel prizes just for showing promise.

My be if scientists made alot more promises then they would get more nobel prizes.
eg: I promise we will find water on the moon, I promise we will fix the greenhouse gas problems.

Hey works for me.

Now he's under pressure to live up to being a Nobel Laureate.

Expect to see more peace in the world.

mind boggles

Nominations for the peace prize closed very shortly after Obama's inauguration - no time to prove any peaceful credentials. The award is a combination of political correctness and an attempt to emotionally blackmail Obama to magicly create world peace to justify the award . Accepting the award is digging himself into a hole.

Questions

Who has the biggest stick in the world to whack you with?

Who was the total twit that used it with such good effect not?

Who is trying to get some sort of diplomacy going without the big stick?

End

I'm with you on this one. I think it's quite clever, he has to follow through now. The presure is on and the world will be waching everything he does with regards to nukes.

Never thought I would see the day

I see that Alexander Downer has been saying basically what everone on this forum has said. Never thought I would see the day I would agree with Downer. Strange days indeed.

It is indeed curious.
IF one follows the money one finds an answer most times but I cant pick up a scent so why?
Mind you it is nice that the world has got a nice warm and fuzzy feeling from this.
BUT if one were a former recipient I think one would feel ones prize somewhat diminished by such an award.
I do find it strange that such an award could be given to the leader of a nation that seems to be (and have been) involved in so many wars and that has such a military focus when seeking solutions.

Perhaps the prize is a hope rather than a current reality.

AND why not Kevin I thought he was the new world leader.....

Let's face it Bert, you wouldn't have to be that flash to look terrific after good old George W now would you ? However, without making any comment on Obama's effectiveness thus far, he does seem to be trying, and that has to be a good thing. I'm not convinced he's earned a "Peace Prize" yet though

By the way, for some insight into how these guys work, I really recommend reading "House of Bush, House of Saud". It's an eye-opener to say the least.

Cheers,

Now let's think for a sec about this ... Let's take the man with the biggest stick out of the picture... who's going to stop the next man with the biggest stick to come and knock you on the head? It's all about balance whether people like to admit it or not. Better the devil you know.
