Great time lapse of year-long walk through China

Christophe Rehage walked 4646km from Beijing to the Gobi Desert, and took a pile of face-on photos with his current location in the background as he went. He's compiled a video of his beard growth over that time and set it to music. It's actually a very enjoyable video. Sounds like a great experience.

A TOURIST who videoed the growth of his beard while travelling for a year has become an internet sensation.

German adventurer Christoph Rehage, 27, recorded his journey across China through deserts, sandstorms, extreme heat and blizzards, while growing “a mighty long beard”.

When ending his trip - which stretched 4646km from Beijing to the desert of Gobi - in November last year, Mr Rehage decided to compile images of himself taken throughout the trip into a video to showcase his transformation.

The five-minute video has now received over half a million hits on YouTube

Mr Rehage, who studied Cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy, took the photographs at arm’s length and then altered them using a photo editing program.

“When I was embarking on my journey, or rather before I had even started, I was already sure of what I wanted to do as a kind of side-project day by day: combine different places, hair and beard growth, try to tell a story within a few minutes.

“I used a wide angle and took shots at arm's length. Obviously, the results had to be altered with photo software to align the eyes and crop for matching frames."

Mr Rehage said it took nearly four months to create the video.

He also created a website dedicated to his trek.

“There seems to be a huge amount of people who can relate to this walking, searching, finding and losing thing their own way.”, said Mr Rehage.

Mr Rehage’s journey was not without its challenges. He experienced problems with his visa in Beijing.

“Being the slow and lazy walker that I am, I had to deal with bureaucracy a couple of times because my visa was about to run out. It wasn't that easy during the Olympics, but I managed somehow.”

However he says the biggest challenge he had to contend with was himself.

“This is going to sound tacky, but the biggest challenge lies always within oneself. In other words, it's not about hurting feet or long lonely roads. It's about the wolf within.”
