Yet another holiday , and you guessed it , up went the petrol prices again just in time to catch most of us who might want to do some extra driving this long weekend .... surprise .... surprise.

So - who's feeling ripped off ?

And with the AUD appreciating over the last 9 months , why is that we are not paying a lot less for our ULP at the pump (see attachment ) ?

Petrol is still quite cheap. Its price in real terms is still less than it was in the 1950's. Cars that did 15 Miles to the gallon and cost 1/3 of a weeks pay to fill. Tyres that lasted 12000 KM (if you were carefull). I am quite happy with the price of motoring today.

Petrol is not cheap. I remember petrol being 15c a litre! I'm sorry Barry but wages haven't went up 8 fold. The OP has posted a valid question - with the Aussie dollar strengthening, and the price per barrel of oil dropping as well, oil (and petrol obviously) should be cheaper. Yet it isn't. Price fixing it is. We all know it, and no government has the balls to do anything about it. We're 90% self sufficient anyways when it comes to oil, so I say we say stuff you to the world oil consortium.

Do you really think the petrol companies are not there to make as much money as they think they can. They sell petrol for what they can get away with. If you don't like it you don't have to buy it. (PS I once worked for Caltex)

Cost of petrol 3/4 per gallon (approx 9c /litre)
Cost to fill the average car 2 pd 10 s ($5.00)
Weekly pay before tax 8pd 10s ($17.00)
Mileage travelled on petrol 190 (312 KM)
Weekly cost of fuel 30% of income

2009
Cost of petrol 125c litre
Cost to fill tank $44.00
Weelky pay after tax $500.00 (I am only a pensioner)
Distance travelled 500 km
Weekly cost of fuel 9% if income

Yes my car uses much less petrol but it goes 1.6 x as fast and is 1.4 x more powerful. (and it is more comfortable)

I drive a SS Comondore, 6 Lt V8 and if driven normally it is more economical than the 4 cylinder Tarago I used to drive.

I thought it would be a fuel guzzler but am very pleased with it's fuel consumption.

And petrol here in Ballarat is actually coming down at the moment, as well.

Barry - your argument is flawed. I am simply talking about the price of petrol - petrol per litre (or gallon) etc. It has risen far above what ordinary wages have risen. I'm old enough to recount what it used to cost, and what the ordinary wage was back then, and what it costs now and what the ordinary wage is now. My father is 71 and he agrees with me btw.

Well , it's one of those consumeables we can't get by without, most us have to drive cars to :
- just get to work to be able to buy the dammed stuff
- to get to anything we want to do ( public transport for most of us is not worth bothering with) .

Essentially , most of us have buggerall choice and just have to try to save a few cents per litre by buying it when the petrol companies lower it (early in the week), always simultaneously ... blind Freddy can see collusion there, but not the government or price watch dog ...

It is suprising how those V8's do on a trip. I had a 5.8 Statesman and it was really quite good on fuel (as long as I didn't thrash it).
Did you get a manual SS? I reckon they would be awesome

I get tired of the way people complain about the price of petrol.

When I bought my Prado, diesel was at least 10 c/l less than petrol. With the reduced consumption (Pajero v6 ~17 l/100Km, Prado TD ~12.5 l/100Km) that was a significant advantage.

Diesel hasn't been cheaper than about 10 c/l more than petrol for 3 years. I can see I need to buy a farm to get the primary producer's rates.

Both diesel and LPG have been *deliberately* over priced by the petrol companies. Again, no government has the balls to have a go at these companies.

Government takes 10% of it and its in their interest we pay more and thats why when we complain to ACCC they do nothing. We have to thank all those morons voting for John Howard and GST. He was the one when he was the treasurer who introduced the taxes on oil even though we have 90% of our own.

Oil companies work together with governments in ripping of customers.

Diesel at the moment is 1c less than ULP at my local servo and has been for a few months. I'm not sure why but I'm not complaining.
