Isn't that LP ugly. Amazing, I'd say 99% of our light pollution is from streetlights and lights left on in business premises. Neither needs to be left on imho.

I installed Google Earth on the laptop and it crashes the whole system.
It says it is not compatable with my video card

Here in central Scotland it's horrible. Sodium streetlights everywhere. I have 5 which shine on my garden giving me a LM of around 3.5
Need to drive for at least an hour to get to 5.5 skies

I think this map is questionable. The nature of the surrounding land seems to have no impact on the reach of a towns light pollution. I also find it suspicious that the light pollution of a remote town would be in perfect circles.

I disagree with the maps depiction of my home area, that's based on my own personal viewing experiences.

I beleive this is a mathematical model only, best used as a very rough guide.

View the 280MB tiff file at 100%, you'll see most of them are not "perfect circles"

Yep, thats the site.
The 280MB tiff is just for the Oceania region... thankfully it has been compressed to a 1.2meg zip file for download.
Why they couldn't have made it a GIF instead of TIFF file I don't know

In some parts, of course, look at some of the very successful Japanese amateur comet and asteroid hunters.
I used to live in Tokyo, and I must admit I saw nothing fainter than Jupiter for the year I was there!
