Astronomers in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs

Hi All,

Alex (mental4astro) and I are thinking of getting together this weekend on the Randwick Girls' High School oval. At this stage we are planning for Friday evening with Sunday evening as a backup. We'll probably set up from around 6:30 pm.

If you would like to join us PM me or simply enter a post.

Also a reminder that I am planning a Galilean Nights Event on Friday 23rd October from 7pm until 9:30 pm (or maybe later if you like). http://iya.aao.gov.au/astronomy2009/...view&extid=546

On the school oval just like we did back in April see post below...

The more scopes the better. I hope you can make it.

Peter that first link is broken.

Might show up on 23rd, my calendar is free that night, so far...

Any others interested in joining us on the night. Daylight saving may push the start back a bit but that doesn't matter.

Hi Morls, welcome to IIS, .

Yes, it is still on. By all means do come. Always good to meet other IIS participants. Open to all.

If you've got a scope you'ld like to bring, great- we get to show more to the viewers. I'll be taking two scopes, hickny has a couple also on tap, & en1gma & wavytone will be there too.

I've been trialing my attempt at the webcam-to-astrocam conversion from 'Projects & Articles' listing on IIS, & I just might make it to show what can be done with readily available gear. It's a little ripper. These two still frames are my first attempts at Jupiter, the first overexposed Jupiter to reveal three Galilean moons, the second shows the GSR & cloud bands & the three moons though faint. This in a single frame through my little C5. I'm chuffed!

Hi Alexander, and thanks for the welcome,
I'm a raw beginner, so I don't have a scope, but I have been reading and using my (small, 8x30) binoculars a little....I'm interested to know how much can be seen from Randwick, I'm thinking about buying a scope sometime...

Only 2 more sleeps until the Galilean Nights event at Randwick Girls' High School. Small advertisement in local paper, students have been informed. School sign advertising the night. All Welcome.

Well not only go but G O N E!!
We had about 60 people all up even though the skies were un-welcoming with thick cloud. Occasionally the cloud broke and we were able to train our scopes on the Moon and on Jupiter but sadly that is all we saw.
As people arrived they were greeted with a short Stellarium presentation including sound track which pointed out a few things that would be visible tonight.
Most were understanding of the conditions but there were still plenty of wows! Thanks to wavytone, mental4astro, en1gma for setting up scopes. It was also nice to meet morls who gathered lots of valuable information on scopes.
