Cranbourne meteorite

Not to far from me in Cranbourne there was a large meteor that broke up and hit the ground some hundreds of years ago. Some pieces weigh in the 1000KG+ size.In London there is a 3.5ton piece of this on display
There is a display just south of the town center.
Very few people I have talked to over the years have even heard of it.

Have you talked to Peter Skilton (I hope I have his name right) at the Mornington Peninsula Astro Society? I think he's researched this fall extensively, and believes there are still fragments to be found. He gave a talk on it at the NACAA in Frankston in 2006. Some small bits are on display at the Melbourne Planetarium.

Another meteorite occurance in Victoria was in Murchison at 10.45 am on the 28th of September 1969, none of the fragments where as large as those of the Cranbourne event but where impressive just the same.

Unfortunately I have not talked to Peter. Years ago I had toyed with the idea of doing some searching myself.I believe a few more pieces have been found in the last several decades. One piece on display at the moment was thrown into a garbage bin before an inquisitive soul retrieved it.

I also thought of Peter Skilton, as soon as I saw the thread title..he is a wealth of information on the Cranbourne Meteorite.
He also gave his talk on this a few years ago at one of his MPAS meetings - Of all the speakers that have given presentations at MPAS (formerly Astronomical Society of Frankston) in the nine or ten years that I've been a member, his talk remains one of my very top favourites.

I didn't know this. But I guess that's why there is a display of meteroites in a park there.. was it next to maccas I think?

I remember there was a thing in the local rag about the display earlier this year. Memory jogs about London and something about other real fragments.
