A first Tarantula and Dumbell from last night

First time imaging these. Spent an hour on both with of these last night. Unmodded 20D with 3min subs through an ED100 using an LPS filter. Stacked in DSS and post processed. Like other tarantulas on the forum, it possesses a strong jade green cast.

OK, now you can tell me what I've done wrong with them

Keith,

That's pretty damn cool!

In the first image, however, there is a red cast to the background of the image. Try selecting everything except the nebula and tone down the red using curves and/or levels.

I'm not sure what's happened with your Tarantula, though. Looks a bit soft and washed out?

Have you calibrated these (darks/flats/flat darks)?

Regards,
Humayun

Nice first images. I can only summise about the colour problems. DSLR unmodded are quite sensitive to the OIII colour range (Jade/Blue/Aqua) and not terribly sensitive to the Ha (red colour range).

A classic mistake when imaging with an unmodded DSLR is to try and add the red which is often missing with DSLR images by using the colour balance and pushing up the red which in turn adds a wash to the entire image. A hard one to overcome without modding the camera.

Pretty good first go at it. I like your dumbell fine details. Keep 'em coming.
