space collision

A few months ago in late afternoon/early evening I was watching a satellite go over north to south with a flashing light which I though unusual but I thought that it was the ISS then some thing crashed into it or it crashed into something, when it happened they was a cone shaped trail that looked like hundreds of broken mirrors for a second or two
I checked the ISS position but it was not it, I tried to contact at the time NASA but no reply
Any idea's?

Could it have been this?
Judging by the time(~3am Eastern) and location(Siberia) mentioned in the article, unlikely.
