I had no idea they were pronounced this way...

Pronunciations of the constellations and bright stars:

http://www.wsanford.com/~wsanford/ex...ion_guide.html

Might be obvious for those in clubs etc, but I found some of these non-intuitive. Eg Bootes

I think this might be a U.S. site, so some of the pronunciations will be with the American accent.

Its all Latin and Greek to me. The most commonly mispronounced constellation I've heard is Pleiades. My father corrected me on this one; he studied Latin and Greek. After I looked it up, I realised it's one of those English vs US things.

US: /ˈpliː.ədiːz/ PLEE-ə-deez or sometimes /ˈpleɪ.ədiːz/ PLAY-ə-deez
UK: /ˈplaɪ.ədiːz/ PLYE-ə-deez

Guess it comes down to personal preference, but I still reckon the English are correct, after all it is their language, despite what the Americans think. How can you have US English?

Pronunciation is always difficult, the correct way to say Paris when you are in an english speaking country is Par-iss, but if you were in France...you should generally pronounce it Par-ee. It seems some words carry their native pronunciation with them into a foreign language, and some don't. So long as the pronunciation is fairly generally acceptable.

I always remember a documentary on TV once where they were talking to a fairly highly qualified scientist about some subject and he pronounced kilogram as "ky-low-gram"...his whole authority evaporated before my eyes!

Fascinating! Is there a universal body that decides on the pronunciation?
I think I need some EL-LO-Q-SHON lessons.

Regards, Rob

I lived in South Wales for three years - never did master the "LL...." sound, as twice occurs in Llanelli in Dyfed! "Swansea" and "West Glamorgan" I could work out so I lived there!

Celtic names. Try bean saidh ;-) I'll give you a tip - it's a very famous Irish mythical monster. And no, it doesn't sound anything like it's spelt. Gaelige has 2 sets of consonants, 2 sets of vowels. Depending on the vowel type, it'll change the way the consonant is pronounced. Certain combinations of consonants have a certain sound as well - fleadh is pron. flag (with a short a, but long l).

Another well known Irish line:

cead mile failte (I'm too lazy to do my accents, gimme a break).

Troy - Pyxis was the only one to catch me out from that site. If you can, get the 3 volume set of Burnham's celestial guides - might be slightly outdated in some areas, but wonderful books imho. Robert goes into Constellations, history, pronunciation, etc.

3. Alpha Centauri -> AL-fah sen-TAUR-eye
11. Beta Centauri -> BAY-tah cen-TAUR-eye
20. Beta Crucis -> BAY-tah KROO-sis

I usually pronounce Rigil Kentaurus, Hadar and Mimosa

I don't often say star or constellation names out loud, but must admit that in my head I've been getting many of them wrong. Notably, I've been thinking these were:

Ophiuchus - Oh-FYOO-sh-us
Bootis - BOO-tis
Carinae - Kah-REE-nah
Procyon - PRO-kee-on
Achernar - Ah-CHER-nar
Rigel - RYE-gel
