Jupiter 31st July, GRS, Wesley impact & Io

Hi All,

Imaged the Wesley impact July 31st, seeing was variable 5 to 7 /10. Had a lot of cloud coming through and initially tried to image through the holes. The cloud cleared toward the end of this session resulting in some nice data.

The morphology of the Wesley impact is most interesting. Obviously it has become quite elongated but part of the trailing edge, that is drifting to the North, appears to be noticeably hooking to the East.

Have posted 3 R channel images and 1 RGB.

I have also produced an animation. I planned for it to cover 2 hours of movement of the Wesley impact, however I inadvertently nudged my scope at about 1:30 am. To find Jupiter again I had to take out my DMK and put in an eyepiece, this resulted in a slightly different orientation of Jupiter in the final few images of the animation so my animation has fewer images in it than planned. I will attach the animation later when it is uploaded to the IIS ftp site, I have asked Mike to help out with that.

Nice work as usual.

I have had very poor seeing over the last few weeks and have not been able to see / image the 'bird strike' and I really appreciate your (and all the other) images of the event.
I am looking forward to the animation.

Beautiful detail in these images Trevor. I'm wondering of the impact scar has spread out and faded a bit?

Another excellent set of images showing the quite dramatic changes as the impact site spreads out.

Thanks Anthony, even the seeing out here at Broken Hill which is normally very good has been off for quite some time. It seems that the times of atmospheric steadiness are accompanied by lots of cloud.

Thanks Dennis, yep was mostly pleased with these results. Still cannot seem to manage a long enough period of time totally unaffected by cloud of some form, to snag a decent set of RGB avi's.

Thanks Peter, yes the material from the impact is becoming more elongated and spreading out. Of particular note is the material at the Northern rear edge of the scar that is clearly hooking to the East.

Note the moon to the right in the animation is Io.

Nice work Trevor, the animation really breathes life into Jove and the dynamic patterns and scars he carries! The Bird Strike looks like a reverse boomerang now!

Thanks Dennis, it was going to be a longer animation but I accidentally knocked my mount about 1:30 am. To find Jupiter again I had to take out the DMK and use an eyepiece. When I put the DMK back in it was orientated slightly differently so the later images couldn't be used.
