[TRADED/FOUND] tripod for antique brass scope

I have my great grandfather's brass scope. It is 70cms long with four extendable tubes, the smallest of which is 2.5cm in diameter and the largest 5cm. It has no way of mounting it so would need a circular clasp on the tripod that the scope could fit into. Failing that, for a suitable tripod I could have a mount made. I would prefer a timber and brass tripod but I am told they are like hen's teeth!! Any suggestions of where I might find one - or similar - also appreciated. Repro is fine. Thanks alot.

Bintel in Sydney should be able to supply the Televue Panoramic mount. If you go for the walnut option (as opposed to Ash) it comes with brass highlight features. It will still have some parts anodised black aluminium. It would be around 1400 dollars and you would still need to make a circular clasp to attach the scope.

Can you post a few pics of the scope ? and do you know its weight?
Are the draws still tight when extended? reason i ask is that I believe these scopes are meant to have support at each end (by hand ) when in use.I have a mount that might suit your needs which probably only owes me about $40 , for stain and a little time .

When you mentioned the scope the other week I did think of offering it to you but wanted to think it over a little bit more .To be honest Robs
nice tripod at nights end convinced me to go that way .

Might be best to start another thread in the atm section to deal with
how best to deal with mounting this scope to the mount .

Hi Judith, this is a hand held telescope. It would have been used in a marine enviro or such.
Are you sure it ever had a stand? Still a very nice bit of gear.

Hi David you're absolutely right! The scope was owned by my great grandfather, a retired ship's captain who used it to watch shipping from his front porch overlooking the port at Ardrossan in SA. However it also has a an eye piece which is a sun filter - maybe for watching eclipses while at sea?? It has never had a tripod but is almost impossible to hold steady. I'm hoping to find something consistent with its era. I have seen tripods with a circular mount that the scope could fit into. They seem to be hard to find tho - still looking! Thanks alot. Judith
