Did anyone catch Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights??
I recorded this programme off Fox (BBC Knowledge channel) on Wednesday at 2:30am (LOL!) and only just sat down to watch it.
What a good show - Joanna (a favourite personality of mine) presented it wonderfully. She's a humble and funny presenter, and it showed on this trip. She travelled through Norway and up to Spitsbergen, managing along the way to fulfil a life-long dream to see the Aurora Borealis. Seeing them for the first time was obviously an emotional event for Joanna, and she conveyed it beautifully.
If you see it posted on a TV schedule again, make sure that you watch or record it. A very nice show indeed.
There's a snippet on YouTube I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPvr9d8UDxs

Love to, but can't Petra Unfortunately I don't have a way of getting the recorded programme off my IQ box and on to DVD at the moment.
If you have Fox HD it's on again today a number of times on BBC HD.

And they are quite a sight mate.
I am am lucky enough that Scotland is far enough North, to make the Aurora a regular occurence during peak cycles. I have seen them myself several times from the Highlands

One of my drivers is hearing, as a young kid,the song "The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen" (which didn't mean the streetlights ) and stories of the Aurora B. seen from Scotland.
"When I was a lad, a tiny wee lad,
My mother said to me,
Come see the Northern Lights, my boy,
They're bright as they can be;
She called them the heavenly dancers,
Merry dancers in the sky,
Sure I'll never forget, that wonderful sight
They made the heavens bright."

Ah yes, Aberdeen, the most radioactive city in the world, as the vast majority of the buildings are made of Granite, indeed in Scotland its known as the "Ganite City"
but my god is it cold up there. Even be my standards

Been there for an overnight stay in a summer. It was cold, bleak, blustery - but we still went for a (muddy) walk in the woods!
Yep, lots of stone!

yes i saw it back when it first was aired too, I was surprised that someone that wealthy and footloose, and who lived at geo lat 50º, and supposedly had a lifetime passion to see them, waited till she was in her 60's! you know the childhood picture book illustration/story and all that.. would of been better if she tried some the solar max she's lived thru, instead of one the lowest activity solar minimum's -
wonder how would she react if she saw a full monty corona going off, (might need CPR), and not one of those anaemic green glows static-ish worms
aurorae wont make ya cry, make ya hyper excited and its unforgettable maybee, depending, whereas ive seen a nice total solar eclipse experience, make even a hardboiled old shearer/truckie get something in their eye,
