Question Broadband providers

Seeing as I'm spending so much time here my dialup costs are starting to match some broadband costs.

I'd like to get a bit of info from those of you with broadband on the isp's your with and their quality service and issues that arise.

I'm looking at some of the $40 plans form these providers

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-plan.c...t=1&dd=1&xeu=1

Anyone able to help?

ozemail have a really good BB package if you want to keep the costs down

256k download spd and 64k upload (average accross the board really)
300mb dowload limit/ month
unlimited hour usage/ month
all at $29.95/ month.

if you exceed the 300mb as nodoubt we would you dont get charged extra, but
you speed slows down to dail-up speed (ie 56k)

I'm with Bigpuddle. $59 a month 256/64 10 gigs flat out per month then slows to 64k.

Not the cheapest but service is extremely reliable. It's only costing me about $10 more per month than dialup, considering how many times it used to dropout and have to redial. Plus it doesn't tie up the phone line.

iinet is the way to go - I changed from bigpond to iinet and haven't looked back.

I'm paying $49.95 a month for 512/128 ADSL with huge monthly data caps that I never reach. It's normal $59.95 but i've got it $10 cheaper because I've got them preselected for long distance.

I was paying $79.95 for the same service with a 1gig cap at Telstra.

There's a whole host of cheap ADSL providers out there these days - shop around, just make sure you get one with a big enough monthly data limit, and decide whether you want 256/64 or 512/128.

Mmm, my niece is on iinet and has had lots of trouble with the service. Must be a regional thing.

I'm with TPG-which I thought was the best deal around

cheaper than anyone else (I think!), unlimited downloads 1.5 Mbs speed and so far reasonably reliable

I pay $109.00 per months for a 2 Ghz line and a download limit of 2 gb's per month. So for a little more a month, you get high speed and heaps of downloading per month.

This might be too much for you needs, but thought you might want to know. If you want to know who it is PM me. I don't like advertising for them over the net.

Thanks everyone. I'll go through each of them and see what options are availble in my price range.

I'd love to be able to use your isp Paul unfortunately 2 Gig per month is about 1 Gig more than I have left on my hard drive. I think its time to funnel funds into something else other than astronomy equipment. Like new HDD, Ram etc.

Oh! and clothes and school books for the kids as well I guess

Thanks again all

I have ADSL 1500/256 with 24 gig download limit....I pay $99 a month.....but i am computer nurd that spends about 10 hours a day downloading...um...how can you say this....movies that have a lot of groning in it...hows that.....lol

But for you Paul.....get with the times and go for a cheap ADSL plan for $29 capped....make sure you get a plan that wont charge you for extra downloads if you go over the limit....what you want to happen is your speed drops down to slower then 56k modem rates with NO extra Charges...this is preferable as extra charges on some plans for over the limit can cost you heaps......you could easily be charged $69 instead of $29 by downloading 500mg over your limit so go for capped no extra charge so your bill is always $29 a month...very important.

And hurry up I dont want to hear anymore of those Engagged signals when I need to contact you...grrrrr

Don't forget you will save a considerable amount on local calls with broadband. Our phone bill dropped more than $30 a month.

I churned from Bigpond (long time customer) to Netspace, it has been just as reliable but much cheaper.

If you had told me 5 years ago that I'd be on a 1.5M/512k plan with 20G download limit I would not have believed you. Now it's second nature.

Hiya Ponders, have you decided on an isp yet? I'm currently with iinet (don't ask me what deal it is, my fiance tells me it's a good value plan with a very, very large download limit and a very fast adsl connection). I like how we don't get charged when we go over the limit and instead, the download speed is just capped. We have had a few hiccups though regarding connection stability but 99% of the time, we have a reliable service. The CS team at iinet are superb and are always so helpful and friendly to help us out. Some of the time, the trouble has actually been with telstra, but I won't start on that...
With regards to your list of providers on the whirlpool link, I've heard internode are also very good. Their connection is better than iinet supposedly but I don't think they are cheaper (it's probably not much of a difference I don't think).
I'm very happy with iinet. You should shop around though like Ice said, because there are some great deals to be had with some of the smaller isp's. Give them a chance. Good luck with your search!
