Hubble Space Telescope - Pictures Missing Pixels blocks

I noticed that in many pictures from the Hubble, many have black blocks covering certain areas of the photos..........

Just wondering if anyone knows the reasons?? Are they covering something they dont want us to see??

Here is an example link: http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/galaxy/pr2006041a/

Sheesh, everyone into conspiracy theories..

No, there is a very good, clear reason for this. In fact, if you search a bit harder on the Hubblesite they will explain it for you.

Basically the camera is made up of three big CCD chips and one smaller one. The smaller one actually has a higher megapxel count and is used to specialty work. But for larger areas when they put the put the four together and you get that zigzag down one side.

Simple answer. Occam's Razor. Don't make answers any harder than they have to be and ditch the conspiracy theories, huh?

Maybe that wasn't your intention, but the phrasing you use above is the same tone to me that most conspiracy-lovers use. I suppose thats the trouble with the internet, I can't see your body language or hear your voice tone. But still, most astronomer dont hide things, they are desperate to be first to find something. There is absolutely no need to hide anything.

I thought it was a fair enough question, and thanks for pointing it out Marcel.
And posting it in the general chat area is the go, I assumed when you said " are they covering something they don't want us to see" you were joking,
As long as you don't ask where planet X is or where does Yoda live you should be OK .
Keep posting mate.

Hee hee,

Nice little game of tennis there folks!

Marcel serves to Jacquie,
Jacquie returns with a scorching forehand answer
Marcel pounces on it with a double handed backhand
Jacquie at the net, volleys down the line
Marcel clips a forehand lob over her head which JUST lands inside the baseline......

CROWD GOES WILD!

Cheers

Chris
