M83

I also took this image last night of M83.

Not really happy with the image. It is plagued by reflections, which are no doubt from the baffle tube. I am thinking I will take the baffle out and install a non reflective surface or spray it with matt finish paint.

I am happy with the detail but not sure about the processing. It is slightly clipped too. It also has little colour in the blue star.

Overall an ok image but it can be improved dramatically.

Not too sure about the numerous reflections as I can't see any!!!

For me, that's about the best, most detailed image of a galaxy I've seen from these GSO RC's so far.
Once again - very heartening for the numerous potential GSO RC buyers out there!!

What reflections? All I can see is a little flare on the very brightest stars and I doubt there is very much you can do about that without doing a full CCD Inspector type collimation and alignment before and probably during each and every imaging session.
To me it is a very nice image.

Very nice image and i see what you mean by the reflections.
You can see them around the galaxy and also on the left side of the picture
But still a very good picture.

Paul i think i found a way to get most of the reflexions out.
First goto select and then click colour range.
Click the reflection in the picture.
Then goto filters and choose noise and then dust and scratches.
In dust and scratches i put radius 15 pixels and threshold 0.

Maybe its a screen setting thing as I cannot see any reflections in the image at all . Very nice image indeed Paul.

Very nice image Paul. Looking through your folder though I like your M83 with your tak refractor a lot more!

Is the reflections the reason you did not go for the longer subs with this image set?

the galaxy itself looks good, the stars are a bit crunchy, perhaps a sharpening or deconvolution issue there- some pre and post layering would fix that. Cant help with the color

i thought you had fixed the reflections in yours but i can see them here, i know some of the others are suffering this more than you. it needs this remedied to get a clean bill of health, must be SOOOOO frustrating. are the edges of the baffles shiny?

Paul I believe you got rid of most of the reflections by clipping the black point correct me if I'm wrong but where they in the same area as my image of M83 towards top left and bottom right

Brighter screens will show the reflections more. It is a product of two bright stars just outside the field of view.

Martin, thanks for the rountine I will take a look at it and see if I can make the image better.

Bert, the reason for the shorter subs is that I have a small flexure problem and using 15-20 minute subs really shows up the problem. The longer subs would highlight the reflections more but that is not the reason for the shorter subs.

Clive I cannot see any shiny surfaces on the baffle, but I think the paint itself has some dull reflective quality. That is the problem.

Trevor, it is the two bright stars up and to the right of this image that are causing the problem. Rotation of the camera would eliminate one reflection but maybe not the other.

I could only see them if I stretched the image.
The black points in the original don't seem to be clipped btw.

I don't suppose a small aperture mask will help eliminate the internal reflections Paul?

Andrew that might work but will likely impinge on the primary. I was thinking that the only recourse was to take out the baffle and sort that out. Not an easy job.

Great detail in the spiral arms. A nice image overall but there is definitely more in it. The reflections aren't too prominent.
