something to look forward to -antares and venus

I was running through Starry Night at the moment and saw this, it would make for a nice photo.

It happens on the 17th October

Did you see the Moon and Venus acouple of nights back?

Weather here isn't a problem it's bushfire smoke : ( and I hear Brissy isn't much better. We had a lovely north-west breeeze for most of the day pushing most of it south. Now there's a fire to the southwest and thats where the wind coming from.

Have you got the LX200 out and split Antaries? It has a green companion that is almost overpowered by the orange glow of the primary. Using a UHC filter helps to identify the second star, after which you can try the unfiltered view to take in the colours.

I've tried splitting Antares with my 8", never thought about using a UHC filter though. Will have to give that a shot. What powers are you using to do this? and do you reckon I'll have much success with my 8"?

Hey, I split Antares the other week using a UHC filter. The contrasting colours of the 2 stars are very pretty.

I'm still out on that one. I too, went out with my UHC filter in tow. At first Yup! I
thought I did split it. One appeared red the other appeared green/blue. So I
thought to myself lets test this out on a known single star. My choice was Altair
in Aquila and much to my disapointment I got the same one red and one green/blue.
Unfortunately Alpha Centuri was a lil low to see the effect on that. but I wouldn't
be too surprised if I see two red and two green/blue stars.

So jjjnettie did you try this on a couple of others, doubles and singles?

But then when I really think about it the filter has always had this effect
on bright stars, seems to seperate the colours.

Actually AstroRon questioned me on this same point. I'd go out now to double check on this, but it has been cloudy ever since buying my new star atlas. LOLOL
