Snake bites man outside Melbourne Myer

Believe it or not!

from ABC online:-

A man is recovering in hospital after being bitten by a brown snake outside a Melbourne city department store this morning.
The 29-year-old man was bitten when he dropped some cardboard into a dumpster in a loading bay outside the Myer Londsdale Street store around 9:30am.
Ambulance paramedic Heidi Taylor treated the man on the scene.
"He was putting some cardboard in [the bin] when a snake leapt up and bit him on the finger, and hung on apparently for a few seconds," she said.
Ms Taylor says there were four visible puncture wounds on his right hand.
Some passers-by gave the man first aid until the ambulance arrived.
The man is in a stable condition at St Vincent's Hospital.
A spokesperson for the hospital says the snake did not inject any venom and the man will be kept in overnight for observation.
Ms Taylor says the crew was very surprised to deal with a snake bite in the city.
"I've been a paramedic for eight years, I've never been to a snake bite wound and I'd say it's incredibly rare in the city," she said.
"We were very surprised."
Snake catcher John Birkett says snakes are sometimes found in inner Melbourne.
"It's uncommon, every year we tend to get snake calls in the CBD, usually from hitchhiking snakes, snakes that are hitchhiking rides on the back of or underneath vehicles, motor vehicles," he said.
"Maybe one or two, if you were to get three calls in a year that would be unusual."
The reptile has not been found.

Snakes in a bin!

what next?

Snakes on a plane?

The snake was most probably after mice or rats.

I doubt whether the snake would be feeding at this time of year. Their digestive processes stop when they are cold, and perhaps this is also why it did not have any venom. I reckon it had found a nice warm spot where it planned to hibernate and he disturbed it.

Don't panic guys it was only 20 centimeters long, any wonder the venom didn't even enter his finger.

I live close to the Yarra river and a 3ft or !m tiger snake is no big deal. You leave them alone and they will not attack. My dog is smart enough now to ignore a snake.

Don't underestimate snakes - the small ones are just as dangerous as the big ones - the venom is just as deadly.

Hey I think there was a bad movie in 2006 with Samuel L Jackson in it by that name.

How did I train my dog? Showed him pictures of a snake and then used two bricks together on his head. Funny though he was more scared of the bricks than the snake!

Bert

Just kidding!

I found my Jack Russell barking his head off about three meters from a tiger snake in the back yard. I called him in and let the snake go. If the dog was stupid he would have tried to kill it. Instinct may have been in play. If it was a rat it would have been dead within the time it took to pounce and break the rats neck (about 100ms).

Sorry

Bert does this mean that your dog is as thick as two bricks?

(oh I see your edit - the bricks were for the snake not the dog... d'oh,speaking of being thick...)

You would be surprised how many snakes are transported around Australia by plane.

Australian Air Express http://www.aae.com.au/ provides such a service.
