Just a hello from a Scot who's emigrating

Thought I'd say hello,

We're planning to move to Melbourne around June 2010 and I'm looking for some astronomy contacts who can give me some pointers to the best visual objects in the southern skies.

I founded a group in Scotland a few years ago (link below) and would be interested to get in contact with amateurs who frequently observe.

Anyway, "Hi" and I hope this is the correct section in which to post this

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

I think you'll like Australia.

Look in the Star Parties sub-forum as people organise events regularly.

Regards,
Humayun

G,day Paul.
When you get here at least you will be able to observe the LMC and the SMC (visually) any time of the year.

Oh and at least you'll get a decent view of the planets here.
enjoy your stay.....Cheers Kev.

hi Paul

a couple of the astronomical societies around Melbourne might be a help to you, depending on whereabouts you'll be living.

the Mornington Peninsula astronomical society is located south east of Melbourne CBD, and has regular members viewing nights ;

or;

The astronomical society of Victoria -

Good luck with your move

Thanks for the welcomes folks,

I was in touch with a couple of societies in Victoria already and was amazed by the answers to my query about the limiting mag from various suburbs. I think the worst I was quoted was 5! I't barely 4.2 here in East Kilbride on a moonless night!

Canny wait!

Cheers,

Paul

Unfortunately it's unlikely now that we'll be able to join you down under.

The Aussie government have put such ridiculous restrictions on the visa processing system that, unless I get a job offer, there's no way my visa will be assessed before I'm 45 in June this year.

If anyone would like to offer me a job however.....
http://www.paulstephen.com/CV_Paul_Stephen.pdf

I currently work in the role of Technical and Warehouse Manager in an IT recycling/remarketing company in Scotland but my family and I are very keen to emigrate to Australia around August 2010. My wifes father spent several years in Australia and always advocated it as a wonderful place for family life. Our daughter is also currently living in Melbourne on a working holiday visa and plans to return with us on a permanent basis as soon as possible.

Due to the recent restrictions imposed by the Australian federal governments on visa applications I will need an offer of employment in order to lodge a successful state sponsorship application so am seeking a job offer in either a technical or a managerial role. I should stress that this is not a request for employer sponsorship.

I am already part way through the migration process and have passed the Skills Assessment stage with Engineers Australia but have to have my state sponsorship granted and visa application assessed before my 45th birthday in June 2010. So ideally, I need to secure an offer of employment as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Paul
