Playing around with Registaxx 3 on old AVi's

Had a bit of a play with some old Mars AVi's taken on a night of bad seeing 040904, in Registax 3
Scope used was my old 6"f8 Acro refractor9no longer with me) 4x PM with minus vilot filter and ToUcam with NI filter. 366 frames.
These were Avi's that I thought weren't any good and were only in B&W 320x240 mode as i forgot to change to 640x480

First attempts at Mars so wasn't worried about them at the time.
I find the new 3 version easier to use once you fiddle around with the settings a bit.
first is a raw frame extracted and then the processed image.
Only done in R3 no other processing used.

That's right , although all the colour images from that night aren't as good .
Can't wait to get my Newt up and running again and try for some more.
A lot to be said about B&W .

Yes I like B&W over colour especially for Comets; do you think you get more detail with B&W generally?

I think contrast is better in B&W .
Here is a more recent attempt at Saturn with a new 80mm ED refractor.
Seeing was good on the night up at Mapelton observatory . I took this and then relised the lens had dewed over badly.
Never worried about processing it at the time.
I think the dew is the reason for the slight blue hue to the image as latter shots have been better.
Didn't do any B&W that night.

Very nice Mark! Chuck a barlow on that for a bigger image scale and it'll really be looking nice!

I think the Saturn shot was with a 2x barlow, but can't remember for sure, was only playing around on the night and did not pay much attention to or record details.
It is only a 600mm FL 80mm refractor and I only got it for wide field DS shots but am happy with it's planetary performance for it's size.

What's your secret Mark.

I've been playing around with both the Registax this arvo (actually all day, it great when you partner works all day Sunday

) using the same avis (es?) on each one with similar settings, but Reg 2 seems to come out better for me each time.

Basically the image that ends up on the wavelets page is fuzzier in 3 than in 2, which leads to heavier "filtering" to remove the fuzziness. The consequence being that the final 3 image generally doesn't look as "natural" as the 2 image. I know this isn't very setting specific but do you have any specific hints?

Actually I haven't changed the settings much from when it was first installed.
I just thought I would give it a quick run on some old stuff and out they came.
I only fiddled with the wavlets on the first 3 slidders and from say 4-7 on no 1 to about 1.4 on no 3 .
I try to use as little as possible to sharpen but still keep the natural look.
I use the automatic processing and use as small as possible processing area depending on image scale .
The shots are not the greatest but I just thought that concidering the bad footage i had to work with they came out as good as some I did in Reg2 with better footage.
I found Reg2 harder to use , but that is a personal thing I suppose.
I think it is like any software that you get use to , it is always hard at first with a change but if you stick with it you will get use to the new.

Hey Paul (1Ponders) that Saturn footage is from when i was up with you that night and the front lens dewed over.

The only problem now is I'm hankerin' for some new, bigger and better eyepieces.
