Brisbane Sky Needle is turned on!!

The Brisbane Sky Needle has now been turned on.
It was turned on a 6:30pm at the end of the local channel 9 news.
I went straight out side and at 6:32 saw the beam under a cloudy sky and a first quarter moon.

Who is the furtherst from Brisbane who can see the light?

Not Happy

Brendan

Can't see it at the moment from western suburbs. Wonder what days/hours we'll have to suffer this??
Saw it briefly on the news tonight too.

Blimey, I thought you guys up there already had enough light seeing as it's a major city.

Good to see the local pollys are getting into the International year of Astronomy.

The degree to which government and local councils, etc continue to blatantly waste energy (in the form of lights) astonishes me. Let alone the effect it has on astronomy. What a shame. But I am not surprised.

Often lights are left blazing all night in the name of 'security'. Ridiculous. I'm sure potential thieves and vandals welcome the generosity. Saves them having to carry torches which would make them more conspicuous.

There is many a good location I have canvassed as a potential observing site, only to find that there are lights needlessly left on all night in the vicinity. Being IYA2009 doesn't seem to have rubbed off at all.

It's a bloody joke!!!

As far as I know...this is one man's (Stefan) colossal tribute to his ego...endorsed by the local council.

Stefan was a big-deal celebrity hairdresser back in the 70s/80s... with a chain of salons across the country.

I find the fact the Brisbane City Council would allow him to construct this gaudy monument to himself quite appalling

But your vote isn't, the only thing pollies/councillors understand is being booted out of office. At the end of the day that's the only power you have.

It's the perfect monument to the 'achievements' of our lemon of a state government.

I had a letter to the editor published into today's (Monday 4th) Courier
Mail in Brisbane commenting on what I thought about the Stefan and his sky needle.

Any supporting letters to the Courier Mail would be most welcomed.
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/
Or to complain to Stefan email@stefan.com.au

The letter was follows

"I would like to thank Stefan for helping to destroy the night sky by
turning on the his Sky Needle. I am an amateur astronomer who enjoys nothing more than spending a night out under the stars in my backyard.

It is already hard enough to enjoy the night with the all poorly designed street and advertising lights around.

Now we have to deal this utilmate in bad floodlighting.

Would Stefan like it I dumped my waste on his favourite golf course or
interfere with his interests / hobbies. I think not. But this is exactly what he is doing to the astronomy community.

There is nothing more beatiful in nature than seeing the stars of the
Milkway arching overhead.

If Sefan wants to give the public a light show, he can turn off the Sky
Needle and use the money to buy light shields for the street lights."
