You're intrigued aren't you Petra? You're looking in the same places I've been.
If we don't manage to solve the mystery online here, I'll send him an email and ask if he knows. The longitude is very close but his latitude is about a degree further south (which funnily enough puts his obs near Loomberah - imagine that?

)
I played around in Google Earth and Google maps. I even lowered the "eye" in google earth as low as possible looking south and followed the New England Highway looking south to get a similar view to what I had on the bike, and I did a search on Oziexplorer in the 1:100k and 1:25k maps and while I can't be sure, I think it is located on the hills just south of Bendemeer.
Unfortunately, the main two landmarks I remembered - the observatory and the towers on the highest hill, are not shown on any of the maps or imagery I've looked at (assuming I've been looking in the right places

). The hills just south of Bendemeer appear to be the right shape though from memory.
