Noob Moon Pics..

greetings all... i've been lurking for a few days now and have really enjoyed clicking my way around the site... and admiring the pics...
i recently bought my first scope and have spent most evenings out the back looking skyward...
i thought i'd have a go at holding my point and click canon cam. up to the eyepiece and getting snap happy...
i was attepting to capture a distant galaxy but the moon kept getting in the way...

taken with saxon 114mm f8 newtonian & canon A470 powershot...

Welcome to IIS Ian. I am waiting for a 12" Dobsonian to arrive. Then I'll be attempting the same type of photography as you, but I have a Pentax Optio 33LF.

It's amazing what you can capture using this method.

Well done and welcome to IIS Ian,

Enjoy the equipment you have in exploring its limits. This is a great and worthwhile pastime. If you find a way to magnify your disposable income then please let us all in on the secret.

Actually I think being an ATMer helps a bit.

Regards
Trevor

I enjoyed your pics there.
You managed to get some good magnification as well. Good work.

As per previous comments about scopes, I have heard this many many times over the years about scope choice / size.

The best scope for you, is the one which you will take outside and use the most.

I have both a 10 inch Meade which I take out when its a New Moon weekend.

But my little 4.5 inch ( 114mm ) scope gets out more often than the big one as its easy and portable.

I hope I didnt bore you, but the above words are so true.

Enjoy and please post more pics....

Geoffro.

thanks again for the comments and welcomes... i've been spending quite a bit of time clicking around the site and its starting to feel quite homely...

as for my scope, i will certainly be exploring its limits... i wont be in a position to upgrade for some time... other than a few accesories... telrad, barlow, eyepieces etc... i'm quite happy with the scope itself, not so happy with the rather flimsy eq1 mount... but its certainly very portable... i will be returning to and Adel - Melb run in the near future and will no doubt find room for it in my sleeper...

no chance of boredom from comments and advice... i'm eager to learn what i can... its nice to find a friendly community in my own hemisphere...

Ian...

Ian, as long as there is enough room for you as well as your telescope in your sleeper. You need to be able to get some sleep along the way.

Once I get setup, I maybe able to arrange for you to look through my 12" Dobsonian if you want to. But that's up to you. I'll have to get a container to put my scope in first though. I dought that it will fit in the front of my ute, and it will get damaged if I put it in the back without protection.

thats an offer that would be hard to pass up on Henry... thankyou... but you would definately need to arrange a safe way of transporting it...
before i turned trucker i had a custom furniture business, i still have most of my tools and will be making a sturdy case for mine before i travel too far with it... the mattress in the sleeper will aslo help give it a smooth ride...

Ian...

Ian...
I've started looking around for a large tool box today. I can get one for around $300 that the original packing box will fit into. I'm on a pension, so it could take a while before I get one.
