ic2948 - m20 - m16

Hi All

A few images from last night ... calm, clear skies and no moon ...
very warm though before a 40 degree day today so only got chip down to -7 degrees. I shot a couple of other objects as well but not too happy with them at this stage of things ... may post them another day if they come together.

Images are a bit noisy probably due to warm ambient temperature ...

ic2948 is 1x600sec plus 7x480sec exposures ... had a meridian flip mid point through the shoot so it's a crop from a mosaic stack ( 123Mb file so heavily compressed ). I started to get field rotation with the 600 second shot so reduced exposures to 480seconds. May do another stack without the 600 second frame.

M20 is 4x480sec exposures ... test shot.

M16 is a single 480sec shot ... another test shot for the coming season.

I was falling asleep doing m20 and m16 so called it a night around 3am.

Three very nice looking images Steve and as far as noise goes they look ok to me? The Trifid looks great!

Thanks Mike ... I must have noise on my eyeballs after the late night session ... hadn't done one for a while. I was surprised how well the Trifid came out for a realtively short exposure so I'm glad you like it.

For a single shot M16 looks a beauty! M20 is great shot too!

Thanks Gary ... I like winter skies better too ... I'm also looking forward to changing my clock tonight and goodbye daylight saving ... hopefully for good after our referendum in May

Steve these are wonderful shots.
I agree with Mike as far as noise goes, they look great, especially for the exposure times.
Stars look good with nice colour.

Very pleasing indeed !

Fantastic trio of images Steve... I very much look forward to the coming season of imaging! This will be my first time re-imaging objects that I imaged last year... Marking my 1 year anniversary in Astrophotography. I very much look forward to hitting M16/M20/M8 again to see how I've progressed in the past year.

I can only hope to achieve results like the ones shown here.

I was very interested to see IC2948. Never seen this one imaged before. Great to see some different objects. Excellent colour processing too

Another common name for this object is The Running Chicken Nebula or The Bat Nebula. I imaged it mainly to capture Thackery's Globules ... the dark matter visible at the centre of the image within the cluster. The entire nebula is too big to fit in the fov of my setup. Others have posted wider field views of the Running Chicken fairly recently.

You get the full Chicken when you have a wide enough fov to see Gum 41 and Gum 39 to make the head and feet.

Good job Steve, I like all 3. I had a crack at the chook myself on Saturday night and I really need to get some more data. I have about 2.5 hours worth 20x5 and 5x10, but it really needs more and longer subs to bring out the neck. Thanks for posting the URL for the other image too, I can see the chook - it really is there
