You don't realise how much you rely on gmail until it's gone

Gmail is down at the moment and has been down for a while tonight.

I feel lost without it!

All of my email (except my work email) gets redirected into gmail cause it's so easy to use, fast, and blocks spam incredibly well.

Hey, just as I was writing, it came back.. Let's hope it stays!

You guys do know that Google does index your mail don't you? Spiders do it as regularly and for the same reasons they do it for web content. Not sure I'd be comfortable with my mail conversations beng indexed by a third party. I suppose if you used it just for non-critical and non-personal stuff it's OK. That doesn't bother you at all?

Spam is always a curse but there is no way I'd be using gmail. I use Mailwasher free to check out what's on the server and then just download to Thunderbird the mail I want, the rest is either bounced or deleted. Mailwasher "learns" what is spam and this is highlighted for you. Once happy with what is selected you just click "Process Mail". Bingo. Clean Inbox.

Yep I agree Chris, that's why I wouldn't like to use it.
It's scary what Google is actually doing.

No catch to Mailwasher free. Its a downloadable program that runs locally on your PC. There is a paid version which allows multiple email accounts and a few other extras, but the free version is adequate for most people. Certainly better than having your mail cared for by some other party. Downloadable from http://www.mailwasher.net/

I don't mind free software - especially open source - what I baulk at is free hosting or email.....

hehe.. nothing is "free" as far as hosting or email is concerned. There is always going to be an angle - even if you aren't aware of it - that's why it's free.
