Unhappy Lack of observation: something terribly wrong with Sydney's weather

Observation has been few & far between since Oct 08!!
  • 3 days Lostock IIS2008 : clouded out
  • Smiley face conjunction: clouded out
  • partial solar eclipse : not visible in Sydney
  • Transit of Titan: so far all of them clouded out
Upcoming Lulin closest approach and Titan's Shadow transit on 24Feb with forecast of showers.
Fellow NSW stargazers, do you share my frustration?
Very unhappy indeed
Vincent

hasn't been that cloudy here lately, but lots of smoke haze so no observations here either Actually some of the nights over the last 2 weeks seemed to clear up, but transparency probably wasn't good. Starting to get withdrawel symptoms...

I know how you feel Vincent. Hasn't been clear for a while, but when it has I have been busy.

Hopefully the following months will bring us some better weather conditions.

greetings from the north coast ...where since about october its been
pretty poor for observing .. we seem to get the end of any bad weather from the north drift down this far ... and when its crappy down south
it mannages to just make it up here as well .. very hard to maintain any motivation of late .

No Photons for me either

Hi Vincent & All,

Yep can be depressing!

But having said that, this is more like "normal" Sydney Spring/Summer weather. What we've had (in the way of generally clear skies) over most of the last 6-7 years -- which coincided with drought for much of NSW, Qld and Vic has been abnormal. This is more like normal.

I can remember a year in the 90s (think it was '96??) when we had cloud for virtually every night for about 8 months (except for full moon-- of course!). Nearly went stir-crazy stuck in the house!

This Spring/Summer pattern will likely break down in about month/6 wks when the westerly stream will re-establish dominance during Autumn/Winter. That will normally prevail until late August bringing a greater likelihood of clearer skies (though not necessarily good, steady seeing).

Having good transparency and good seeing in Sydney at the same time is very rare. You've normally got one or the other.

Sharing your frustration ...

Best,

Les D

Yep, feel the pain as well. Could be that number of bad days is directly proportional to the amount of new telescopes being purchased
