Valentine's Day (14th February) Massacred...
Woke up today with drizzle and rain... Then remembered it was Valentine's Day, awhaargh...
Then I .... No phone calls, no messages, absolutely nothing at the door... (except a dead 'roach)
Perhaps next year...
Did anyone do any better?
(Thought IIS, then worried. Jen will probably go absolutely nuts with the emotion-cons!! )

Awe....don't worry, mate. It's highly overrated anyway and really just another commercial scam. The main thing is you still have family and friends, and that's what truly counts
Anyway, you still have the whole day to go, yet

I wouldn't let it get to you.....like I said, it's highly overrated. Anyway, it shouldn't matter what day it is. If someone loves you, they should be able to express it at any time, not just on the one day of the year.
Go do something you like doing and forget about it

Na, don't believe in it, it is just a commercial money making scheme, I reckon.
I give those sort of gestures spontainously during the year.

Yep, I reckon they would, probably the older generation I expect, I think the young ones are really into it, more than us old buggers.
We don't have to hunt anymore.

Yup! Its all very nice but like any 'special' day has become so commercialised that its a real turn off (although admittedly it can be a bit of fun!!).
Give me a card or flowers or something sparkly (other than the sparklies in the sky) or even just an extra big hug on any other day of the year and it will be much more appreciated.
Its pagan origins come from the third century to honour the god Lupercus who was said to keep sheep flocks safe from wolves...at the same time to celebrate one of the love goddesses, young womens names were drawn from a box by 'blokes' and it was said that these matchings would last forever!! Of course the Christian Church substituted the name from Lupercus to St Valentines day in order to try to replace the heathen practice.
So from its earthly origin it has become a money maker for buisness!!

Do you mean playing murder in the dark??
Undercover detective games at night??
Perhaps the proceeds of the hunting and gathering ritual?

I had astrognosist for breakfast...

I once mentioned this odd term in Dogstar's thread on 10th January; "Why is it so?"
All it is, is a fancy smancy term for a run-of-the-mill visual observer.
The archaic word, astrognosy, or practised by astrognosist, is the science or knowledge of the stars, especially of the 'fixed' visible naked-eye stars. This really implies not outstanding knowledge of astrophysics or the mathematics behind it, but still formally distinguishes one from the lameness of astrology (Again, my sincere apologies for using such language on such a family site as ISS.)
Probably just being my usual "smart-A", but I think it is apt term for my interests - especially the historical astronomical ones.
Probably also a very good word for "silly old bugger"?
NOTE: Should get it engraved on my gravestone, because they would probably ask the same question! However will my luck, they would probable just say " well, he didn't know either?"
And yes, today, I am practising my self-deprecating humour. Sorry.
