Wow, do you know the scale?

How much area consumed by fire does this represent?

Yes, I agree...I was showing some people the pictures and trying my best to convey the scale of it in a meanigful way...so I was wondering if there where any size estimate. No doubt it is horribly big!

I created a Google Earth Image Overlay which works pretty well at showing the scale of the fire. This overlay will grab the the 'Photo-like image' directly from NASA.

http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/3..._photolike.jpg

Just open up 'Vic Fires 9 Feb 2009.zip' and place 'Vic Fires 9 Feb 2009.kmz' on the desktop. When you double click it Google Earth should start and focus on Victoria. After a few seconds the 'Photo-like image' will be downloaded from NASA and be placed properly on Google Earth.

Hope all that makes sense.

GG

EDIT: I've included 'Vic Fires HI_Full.zip' which uses the picture from the OP's aticle that shows the burnt areas in 'brick red'. View it just like the other one.
