Alchopop What !!

Had a very long day today, had to fill the car twice and thought I'd get a 6 pack of Jim Beam and Cola cans on the way home.

We can't buy grog in SuperMarkets up here so I went to a local liquer outlet and they wanted $25.75 for a Jim Beam and Cola 6 pack. I then went to a local liquer barn and they had 700ml bottles of Jim for $27.75. What the !!

Alchopop tax be damned, what a farce.

I have on occasion been known to drink my bourbon straight, so I now find in these days of the alcopop tax that if I'm out somewhere I just have it on the rocks.

I gave up mixing it with coke ages ago... changed to dry. It helps me sleep.

Heard a couple of weeks ago that some of the co-s selling these things are starting to get around the tax issue.

The tax is based on small bottles of mixed spirits.
These co-s now are replacing the spirit content with a wine based substitute that will not be taxed.

For memory it has started with the drinks that were normally Vodka based.

i have seen these for sale here, and i found it bizzarre!! they are frowned upon almost everwhere else on earth! although from an outsiders POV, booze in general here is unbelievably cheap, and i mean uber cheap.

strange eh?

...it's the sugar

Wait for the beer-based coolers as the big boys try to dodge the taxes... for me the sugar content in these things gets me .... why does it all have to be so sweet....oh, yes, of course.....to cater for younger tastes...

Tried the bourbon, tequila and the rum mixers.... they all taste like they should be used to flavour a pudding or something... my mother used a bottle of tequila mixer I left behind to cook with and found it wonderful...and yes she did cook not drink..something with fruit in it I think..

Currently consuming Gran Patron Platinum, Don Julio 1942, Don Julio Anejo and Havana Club Anejo when I can find it.

buying by the 6 pack is never economical.. coopers pale ale here costs around $35 per carton.. but you can pay $17 for a 6 pack.

those premixed spirits like jonnie walker are $50 per carton so im not surprised a 6 pack was $23... its just a ripoff buying by the 6 pack.

buy a carton and keep it in the spare room and 1 six pack in the fridge at a time (sorry not trying to tell you what to do i just hate being ripped off like that!)

There is some benefit in all this I've noticed in that the youngsters next door now mix there own from the bottle and as such get trashed and fall down much sooner in the evening .. makeing for a reasonably quiet night
most of the time

Having visited Europe last year, a place where almost everything is more expensive, I was surprised to see how cheap alcohol and tobacco products were by comparison. The quality is much better too!

They appear to have a much more liberal attitude where alcohol is available from almost any store and even street cart vendors.
