What ever happened to Katoomba telescope?

Just out of general local history interest, does anyone know anything about a telescope that was a tourist attraction at Katoomba. Photo is on the Flickr link below

I remember seeing this in the '70s. As far as I recall it was a rangefinder for naval gunnery, not a telescope.
