I was watching that on the news tonight Ian.

As grumpy as I get with the over commercialisation of Christmas I always find something to cheer me in the last few days before Christmas and then I start to enjoy it.

I used to live one street over from a street that all of the houses competed to see who could be over the top the most with Christmas lights and decorations.

There were some truly incredible efforts, with animatronics, running trains, everything you can imagine. Hundreds of people would make the journey to see and over time a kind of street fair was built with vendors even selling hot chocolate/coffee (remember this was in a truly cold winter climate with snow and everything).

But of all of the elaborate lights and decorations on the houses (they were spectacular) my favorite was the house at the end of the cul-de-sac who simply wrote out in script in lights "Bah Humbag!"

It was a classic.

Only good thing about Xmas is the good food and the treats. But I can do without the expense of buying it and the presents (not that I've spent much on presents this year).

baked Xmas lunch , turkey with the usual baked spuds, onions, carrots, pumpkin for wife) with a nice redwine sause - got aircon so it is not too hot no matter how hot the day is)

maybe a pressy or two

just the two of us this year - his nibs can't afford to come home from Mackay this Xmas . Will be a quiet Xmas this year - and the first one since we married that we're not visiting anyone on Xmas day - bliss !!!!

Where can I get lights that spell out - BAH! HUMBUG!

I particularly hate trying to get a park at the malls in the last few days before Xmas - did the last of the shopping today (some dips , the turkey breast meat roast and a few final things ....) , Mt Hutton parking area was full , hardly a parking spot in sight.

No need to get the car out of the garage before Boxing Day now .... and no plans to go out into the madness on the roads before then.

Prawn sangers for lunch today .... yum yum...

Smoked Leg Ham and salad for tea tonight .... yum yum...

Only things I like about Xmas is the nice food ....

While I lived on my own (about 12 years) Christmas got cancelled due to lack of interest.
Always glad when its over and we can get back to normal. Not a party person, much prefer a quiet dinner with a few friends. But if thats your bag, Merry Christmas to All And a Happy Yule to all the other Pagans out there

bah humbug sounds about right.

the ancient roman festival of saturnalia...winter solstice festival , goes way back in history pre christian and beyond , much the same as the spring festival ie Easter, hence eggs rabbits etc all fertility symbols.

Just commercialism by the traders and big religion as it bumps up their profit margin


You dont need a special time to show your love to those you care about, you can do it all the time as you feel so.

Well I LIKE Christmas.

And as people have pointed out, societies have generally found it necessary, or at least useful, to have structured times for teaching children (and adults too?) the importance of generosity and open-heartedness.
