good bye oran park...

goodbye to oran park and to skaifey

went to the final round of the V8s and also the final use of oran park. the race track will soon be known as oran park town (lame name) and the exising track scrapped. over 40 years of history there.... and 40 race wins for mark skaife who ran his final race too.

anyhow heres a few shots from the day.

Nice panning on the last one - especially having Ingall in the sister car in the background. No pics of Skaife ???

Great shots Ving. It will be sad to see the track go. That used to be my home track when I raced motorbikes back in the 70's and 80's.

I have some great memories of the Castrol 6 hour on a Kawasaki 1000.

Cheers

Great shots there. Like others here I also have some great memories if Oran Park. Sad to see it go the way of Amaroo, this leaves only Eastern Creek for us Sydney-siders to frequent and it just doesn't have the appeal that the old tracks did.
Ving, I went to watch the Castrol 6 hour at Amaroo in about 1979 I think, did it move to Oran Park after that? I have no memory of it doing so.

Hi Clayton, the 6 hour was moved in 81 I think. That was after a wet 6 hour at Amaroo and a series of bad accidents at the last corner before the main straight.

It used to be quite scary going into that last corner and seeing nothing but solid rock in front of you.

I hear you there Ric, I have twice experienced the horrors of stop/go corner (only from a spectators point of view) as that was where I would always sit. First was a Go-Cart hitting it full on and second was Terry Bosinjak in a brand new Porsche. He was leading the race with one lap to go, came into the corner and suddenly had no brakes. He tried to turn but the ripple strip just made him fly straight into that rock wall. The earth shock & there was silence from the crowd, all expecting the worst, but he got out ok. Mind you the new porche never turned another wheel. Ahh, the memories.

They are thinking of an annual major event at Olympic Park, but not the frequent, lessor events like club meetings. In my mind, they are always better than the V8 series. People actually make passing maneuvers in these races, it's refreshing to see.

I much prefer the technical corners + sharp/sweeping left & right turns at Wakefield Park near Goulburn than Oran Park's main South Circuit (the GP circuit - North & South circuits combined is better but it's often not available).
