Subject: [southern-aurora] Reg Sutherland

Sad news. Reg Sutherland passed away yesterday (September 1) evening.

NZ's South Islanders in particular will know Reg. He was a popular speaker
at the Stargazer Getaways at Herbert. He is best known as NZ's most
prolific aurora observer. He maintained a constant watch for aurorae for
at least 50 years, much of that from his farm at Edievale in West
Otago. For the last nearly 20 years he observed the Sun for sunspots,
often getting an observation in for every day of the month. He also had a
jamjar magnetometer which he read four times a day over a period of 17
years noting both diurnal and annual variations in the Earth's magnetic field.

He was a strong supporter of the RASNZ Aurora & Solar Section and I for one
will miss him.

Regards

Bob
