Tekapo's night sky to be world's first star light reserve.

This article is well worth a read. http://www.stuff.co.nz/timaruherald/4766664a6571.html

Steps are in place to make Tekapo's night sky a world heritage site. already local laws are in place where outside lights have to point down away from the sky and all the street lights are sheilded from above to reduce glow. This is all to do with the Mt John Observatory near by as it's good for the community with tourism. http://www.tekapotourism.co.nz/mt_john.htm

Anyone heard of anything similar in Australia? What about all you in the Northern hemisphere? comments welcome.

By the way I don't live in Tekapo I live in a nicely light polluted city a couple hours down the road.

Bugger

Cheers anyway

Gary

The government is not interested in cutting green house gases if they where they'd do something about light pollution, you see they can't charge themselves a carbon tax could they now ????

I know of rural residential development areas in New Mexico that are set up specifically as dark sky residential sites, and as such end up being the host sites for a lot of "observatory farms". I'm not aware of specific places elsewhere.
