Bowral Lookout (HDR)

Hi all,

Yesterday was a public holiday (Family and Community Day) in Canberra. Really, it's just an excuse for a day off on Melbourne Cup Day. It also happened to be a beautiful day.

I decided to go for a drive up to Bowral as I had never been up there and a colleague of mine had a wedding there recently. I figured it'd be a picturesque town.

I looked for the nearest points of interest on my Navman and found a lookout. So, I drove up the mountain, parked the car, ate an almond croissant from the award winning patisserie on Bong Bong Street, and went for a walk with camera and tripod in stow.

After about ten minutes of walking, I came across a cliff edge jutting out. Perfect.

Being a glutton for punishment, as always, after the success of my Lake Weereewaa shot, I decided to try another HDR mosaic. This is a mosaic of 14 images, each of which was a 3-image HDR composition (AEB on the camera).

This is a horribly compressed image (12.5% of original, in size) and as a result, you will notice heavy artifacting. If anyone's interested, I can direct you to a higher resolution version. Also, I didn't bother "fixing" the image where ghosting has occurred due to movement in the branches of the trees; I was high up and there was a fair breeze.

Data: Canon EOS-350D, Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L (set to 24mm and stopped down to F/8). God, I love this lens.

Comments and critique, welcome.

Regards,
Humayun

That is really nice and subtle HDR Humayun. The clouds seem consistent for a 15 (x3) shot mosaic. Were they slow moving or are you super quick taking the shots?

David,

Cheers, mate. If you do get down there, make sure you try the food at Elephant Boy Cafe and the patisserie just down the road from it.

Chris,

Thanks! It was a bit of both, actually!

Very good image. you havent over done the HDR which is great. It looks like you had a Polarizing filter on the lens with the depth of the sky. Your choice of f8 works well with the depth of field as well.
Well done

A very nice HDR Humayun, well done.
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 IS L is my most used lens, it's so versatile.

Andrew,

Thank you, kindly, sir.

I noticed the polarizing effect whilst processing the images. I think it comes out quite nicely.

Andrew,

Thanks, mate!

Yeah, it is such a versatile lens. I love the background blur when shooting a close-up subject at 105mm, wide open. I wish it came in a f/2.8 configuration.

I'm looking forward to purchasing the 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM.

Regards,
Humayun
