Geocoding... in Reverse!

Reverse geocoding: the process of converting a latitude/longitude pair into an address. Google now offers this.
"As a live demo of the reverse geocoder, check out MeetWays, a site that mashes up the Google AJAX Local Search API with the Google Maps API and just a bit of maths. It calculates the mid point between two addresses on the map, uses the reverse geocoder to find out the address for that point, and then does a local search near that address to find places to meet that are halfway between. Since reverse geocoding works in all the places that forward geocoding works, then you should be able to meet up with your friends in more than 70 countries."

I tried it for my address in Hobart and my folks in Melbourne. It said we should meet up just south of Alice Springs!

I presume that is better than half way across Bass Strait - especially if you are driving. Of course if you do meet just south of Alice be sure to visit the Henbury Meteor Craters.

Ahh, yes, quite a bit of refining actually. It clearly doesn't consider the road network. For places in Australia it finds the geometric halfway point and then goes to the nearest town, if there is one close enough. So for Wollongong - Alice Springs it gives Tiboburra, which is not the way one would drive. For Wollongong - Broome it give a spot in the ocean south of Hawaii. For Wollongong - Broome, Australia it gives a spot in the desert in northern SA. For Wollongong - Auckland NZ it suggests we meet in the middle of the Tasman Sea.

For now I'll arrange meetings the old way!!
