Fathers day toys.

Hi all,

Just thought I would get in early and ask the old questions, what did you get for Fathers Day. Doesn't just have to be astro related can be anything really (within the guidelines of this forum)

I can answer now as I will be getting it early. I told the kids I wanted to buy my own present this year, I think they were happy with the decision, they know I am hard to buy for. (also a 1.5yo and a 3.75yo going through the shops together, they could buy me anything) Sooooooo.....

I bought myself a second hand NGF-DX3 focuser for the Dob. Thanks to Wavelandscott for putting it up for sale at the right time.

Its just under $150 Australian to my door (given postage and exchange rate). Ordered from Lymax (http://www.lymax.com). I have been eyeing it off for a while...soon I will be able to eye it off a whole lot more!

John,

Yes they are nice but what makes them so expensive is the fact they use phase coated roof prisms. Optically (for night time astronomy) they are not quite as good as the Nikon 10X42 Superior E which are porro prism design and 1 of the best astronomy binoculars I have used. The good thing ?? They only cost a bit over a grand

http://www.maxwell.com.au/products/n...ade/se_cf.html

Maxwell lists the RRP as $1,529 but you can get them for about $1,100 and they are an outstanding astronomy binocular.

Hi John,
I agree,I dont think many roof prism binos are as good as the porro type for Astronomy, although the ones my wife bought me, are surprisingly good for the price, they wont replace my porro types for Astronomy.
Your also correct re the Nikon Superior E, they get some good reviews over on Cloudy Nights, mainly the 12x50s,unfortunately as a pensioner I probably will never be able to afford a pair, the only Nikons I have are a pair of 9x25s I bought off ebay for $26.00,which I love.
Regards.John
